Porsche 8 Digit Vehicle Identity Numbers
Understanding Porsche's unique Eight Digit Vehicle Identity Number, or VIN, for the 1968 Model Year
For the 1968 model year Porsche introduced an eight (8) digit Vehicle Identity Numbering (VIN) system. The first four digits reveal the model type, model year and model version code. The remaining four digits represent the sequential chassis number of the Porsche.
Decoding the Digits
The first two digits indicate the model type. '11' indicates a 911 and a '12' indicates a 912.
The third digit is the last number of the model year. So an '8' would indicate a 1968 model year.
The fourth digit had the job of telling you everything else abut the car. So a '1' for example would indicate the car to be a Coupe, L version.
The last four digits are simply a sequential serial number. But that's not all. The first digit of this set also inidcate the body coach builder. So '0 to 4' would show the car's body was manufactured by Porsche, and '5 to 9' would indicate it was built by Karmann.
As an example the VIN 11860001 would indicate the car is a 1968 Porsche 911 Coupe S built by Porsche. This particular Porsche has body sequential serial number 1.
