The history behind the website and spending 4 years designing and building my own 917 replica:rn The reason for embarking on my quest to design and build my own 917 replica stems from a certain race in April 1970. That race was the very wet 1970 BOAC 1000kms, when I was lucky enough to be at Brands that day at the tender age of 13, to witness one of the most legionary sports car victories ever seen.rn The driver, a diminutive Mexican called Pedro Rodriguez won by 5 laps in torrential rain. This was after he was called into the pits, for a telling-off in the early laps by the race organisers, for passing under a yellow. rn It was after this that the “red mist” descended and he just drove away for everyone else! I still have the video clip in my mind of watching him power slide this 4.5 Flat 12 monster out of the Druids in the pouring rain, lap after lap!rn Then Mr McQueen stared in a certain film called Le Mans, driving the gulf 917. Some of you may have seen the film Rush, about the 1976 F1 world championship battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt directed by Ron Howard? rn Well the 1970 and 71 sports car championships had a very similar battle between Rodriguez and a Swiss driver by the name of Jo Siffert. This captured the racing public’s interest in a similar way, also enhancing the 917’s mystical image.rnAnd as a 13 year old, I thought one day I have to own one of these cars! Dreams, well they seem to last for ever with me! But the value of these cars rose (only 30 or so coupes were ever built) and quickly passed my financial limits and continued off into orbit, now in the £5 to £10 million range.rn So the only way to own one was to design and build from it from scratch. And this is what I have been doing for the last 2 years, sitting in the lounge doodling away on my laptop, while my wife reads, knits, watches the TV, and makes wedding cakes.rn The catalyst for starting this project, was finding a 917 bodyshell for sale on eBay back in Aug 2011. Taken as a splash from Pipers original 917, it is was 100% correct, so off I immediately went to see it, and negotiate a suitable purchase price. rn Then the hard work began.... to get to the stage shown in the ppt slides, around 2500 hours of design in Catia, and another 500 hours of engineering. rnAnd that the car is to be primarily a track car, BUT that I will be taking the car through the IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) system in the UK to get her road legal.
