Could agree more Matt.  Doing the work yourself saves a bundle of money, but also helps you get to know your Porsche intimately wich is essential for fault diagnosis in the future.

Doing work myself has helped to keep the costs in check... sort of. Therre were plastic tanks on the oval dash 944s, but fitting to mine would have involved some welding to move a support beam, or so I believe. Hopefully the steel tank won't rust through again too soon.

Great stuff Matt.  It's a real inspiration IMHO for others to follow.  It does well to dismiss the myth that it costs a fortune to own and run a Porsche.   You used to be able to get a plastic petrol race tank.  Are those days long gone with the age of saftey regulations?

Thanks guys, this video was taken a couple of years ago - it was a bit of a punt with the purchase... it was originally going for around £1,000. I bought it as a non-runner, but somehow got it started, didn't really know what I was doing back then. It needed some welding to get through the MoT. I have replaced the fuel tank with a spare that I checmically sealed - doing that I gave the transaxle a clean up, fresh oil and regrease. The car now has a 160bhp 944 engine I picked up for £300. Interior, it's got second hand race seats and harnesses, Momo wheel and DAB radio. Best of all, it's now on SPAX adjustable coilovers, which have transformed the car. Plus a bunch of other bits - engine mounts, bushes, etc. I think the water pump is about due for a change.

I'll keep on tracking it, naturally, some track videos on here too. Jobs to come, money permitting, bodywork needs attention, I would like a lightweight flywheel, fix the racked dash and get a ClubSport finish to the trim.

That's alot of car for the money.  What were the major problem areas when you bought it and how far down the road to fixing them have you got?
