Looks like this was a problem with the dizzy cap / rotor when wet. Finally gave up the other week.
I hate to say it, but I've no idea. Although when I cleaned up the engine the air-oil separator was completely clogged with oil back through the idle valve and in the MAF, may well have had something to do with it.

Dizzy's can be a real pain and you never know when they might fail. I have decided to go wasted spark and change over to coil packs and do away with the distributor assembly.
